After some excellent racing on the Knavesmire last week, we’re back to some low grade fare this week, but there are 3 horses that take my eye at Carlisle and Thirsk on Monday.
3.15 Carlisle
A stiff 6 furlongs to contend with and a low draw as well as proven staying ability will be a big plus. This is a Class 5 handicap but only for horses rated up to 70 and that is a positive for top weight, and my selection, Fyrecracker.
In his 18th handicap, it’s only his 3rd race in Class 5 and the first time he’s gone in a 0-70. He may well be winless for some time now but he’s running with enough credit to suggest his turn is just around the corner. He’s drawn on the inside in stall 3 so that will help and recent form, including an excellent 3rd of 19 in a Class 4 at York, should be enough to put him in the frame here. I’m not sure the minimum trip suited last time so a step back up to 6 will help, as will a 1lb drop in the weights.
This race really shouldn’t take a whole host of winning and there’s nothing he should be fearing in this line up. His easiest task for some time and I think odds of 8/1 are generous.
N/R – Back Fyrecracker (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 with Bet365 (1/4 odds 1-3 BOG)
7.05 Thirsk
A Class 4 handicap for 3 year olds and there’s one race that really takes my eye here. That is the Peter Fahey trained, Jamie Spencer ridden Jenniechild. To my knowledge, it’s her trainers first runner on these shores in a flat race and it’s interesting that Spencer travels up to ride just 2 horses, this being one of them. Her form has been pretty solid too, having only raced 5 times. She won her maiden on her 3rd start last season when producing a great late burst to get up after being blocked behind a wall of horse 2 furlongs out.
On her reappearance, she finished 3rd of 13 but it probably didn’t help that the front 3 were separated by the width of the track. Last time out, off today’s mark of 74, she was 2nd of 4 behind a horse now rated almost 90. A bigger field where she’ll get a bit more cover will help as well the 71 day break, and I expect her to be produced late to land the spoils here.
Back Jenniechild (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 6.50 with Coral (1/5 odds 1-3 BOG)
8.05 Thirsk
Our final bet of the day comes in the closing 3 year old handicap at Thirsk, which is an event for horses raced 0-70. The one I like is the handicap debutant, Lovin’ Spoonful. The likeable filly has only been out 3 times and has shown enough to suggest she could get off the mark the first time of asking in handicap company. She struggled on her first 2 runs, the first time running green before making late progress and the 2nd time when the trip was far too sharp.
Stepped up to 7 furlongs last time, she ran a super race only giving way late on to a pair of decent types, Wrapped and Manton Grange. That pair are rated in the high 70s which makes our horses’ opening mark of 65 very appealing. A reproduction of that effort should see her in the winner’s enclosure and confidence is heightened by the form of the stable, with 4 winners and 4 2nds from 14 runners in the last 2 weeks. 3 of those 4 winners have been at double figure odds.
N/R – Back Lovin’ Spoonful (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 8.00 with SkyBet (1/4 odds 1-3 BOG)
