Horse Racing – Naas, Haydock & Chelmsford City Saturday 4th July Tips and Betting Preview

Understandably most of the racing attention on Saturday is on the quality card taking place at Epsom involving the two classics, but we shouldn’t forget the vast amount of action that is on offer elsewhere over the course of the day.

Away from Epsom there are three other meetings in the afternoon, where they race at Haydock, Naas and Bellewstown while in the evening there are cards at Yarmouth and at Chelmsford City. We’ve picked out four bets across three of those meetings.

12 run in this 7 furlong handicap for 3 year olds.  Star Of Cashel is the favourite but is winless in 4 starts and whilst he’s sure to win races at some point, he’s no value to score here.  Darkest probably has the best form in the race, judged on his 2nd to Love Locket at 2 but it was disappointing he failed to score when sent off favourite on reappearance.

Betting

At double figure odds, But You Said is the selection from the Jessica Harrington yard, with Shane Foley taking the ride.  He had 3 runs as a 2 year old and failed to get his head in front but there’s enough to recommend him here.

He was midfield on debut behind the very useful pair, Peace Charter & So Wonderful, and followed that up with a 2nd behind now 100-rated Tango over an inadequate trip.  Admittedly he was poor on his last start but that was when encountering his fastest ground to date.  He’s won 1 of 4 in the field to record a RPR higher than their current mark but it’s fair to say the other 3 are fully exposed.

This son of No Nay Never is one that will appreciate the yielding ground & any further rain that falls will be in his favour.  It’s his first time beyond 6 furlongs which is also in his favour and, provided he’s ready to go on his first start this term & his stalls troubles are behind him, he’ll go close.

Tips

Back But You Said (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 11.00 Betfair Sportsbook BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)

The ground is expected to be heavy for the last race on the Haydock card, a Class 3 handicap over 10 furlongs for 3 year olds.  11 are expected to face the starter.   Arch Moon is the favourite after winning here last time out but Louganini is likely to be the best of the favourites & has a good opening mark for one proven on the ground.

It’s Good To Laugh & Luigi Vampa bring good form to the table but are exposed, and I’m a big fan of Surrey Pride but this is almost certainly not his ground.

Betting

Zegalo is the one for me here.  From the in form yard of Roger Varian & ridden by the equally in form Rossa Ryan, he has lots to recommend him.   On debut last year, he finished 2 places in front of Ropey Guest, a horse now rated 104 so a mark of 79 here is surely in his range.  That was on firm ground but then he followed it up with a second & a win on soft ground.

On his only start at 3, he was 3rd of 5 at Doncaster but that was over a longer trip which probably didn’t suit.  He did only give way inside the final furlong & looked in need of the race so the run was better than it first appeared.  First time cheekpieces are applied today & he could get an easy time up front on a course favouring front runners.  There’s plenty of rain around so this son of Zoffany looks like to get his ideal conditions & should go well.

Tips

PLACED – Back Zegalo (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 12.00 BetVictor BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)

This is another cracking 3 year old event, this time 10 runners over a mile in a Premier handicap.   Lough Cutra, the likely favourite, has run in 3 decent maidens but has yet to get his head in front & this is no easier.   Toronto is thoroughly exposed but has run well in top company.  His lofty mark of 99 is probably just about deserved & this is his first time outside of Group company since his maiden days.    Baraniya is lightly raced & won last time out but I’m not sure a mark of 87 is overly lenient.

Betting

Jessica Harrington runs two and it’s the second string, Ocean Monarch, that gets our support.  He ran 3 times at 2, all of them at Dundalk on the all weather.  He won his 2nd start & was then 3rd in a good race where the front 4 pulled clear.  That day, he was 2 lengths behind Choice Of Mine, the winner in receipt of 5lbs & now rated 95, and 4th in that race was Dark Vader (off level weights with the selection) who’s now got a mark of 92.  Our horse races off 84 so appears to be well in judged on that.

On his seasonal reappearance, he was dropped back in trip to 7 furlongs in a good Curragh handicap on ground too quick for him.  He was drawn in the widest stall, tacked across & raced in last for much of the way before running on well to finish 6th of 17.  That was a decent run but he was a little outpaced so the extra yardage at a stiffer track will suit.  Add to that a better draw and more suitable ground, he should go well off the same mark.

Tips

VOID – Back Ocean Monarch (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 15.00 Bet365 BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)

Our final bet comes in a 7 furlong, Class 4 handicap with a field of 11.   This looks very open indeed with the markets going 4/1 the field.  The 3 at the head of the market are Blame Culture, Full Intention & Philamundo, and there’s nothing jumping out to say any of them look overly well handicapped.

Betting

The one that does appeal is Quick Breath.  He was last of 5 on reappearance at Newbury but that was in a Class 2 and off a mark of 81 so the 2 grade drop in class & 3lb drop in mark could do the trick today.    Add to that he has a useful 5lb claimer back on top who has won once & finished second 3 times in 8 rides.

The selection has won here off a mark of 76 (off 78 today but with a 5lb claimer) & also won at Kempton on the all weather last year off 74 so this mark is within range.  Since that Kempton win, his form in this grade over this trip reads 2nd off 80, 2nd off 82, 2nd off 83, 3rd off 83 and 6th off 82 when hampered at a crucial stage.    Those runs suggest he’s very well handicapped today &, with his small yard in good form, he’s a definite each way player.

Tips

Back Quick Breath (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 8.00 Coral BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)
