We are into the latter stages of the Indian Premier league now although the knockout stages have to wait a little while longer as the top two teams in the table get the chance to play for a spot in the final when the Sunrisers Hyderabad take on the Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday.
The prize for the winners of this match is a direct route through to Sunday’s final while the losers get another chance to make it to the showpiece occasion in the second qualifier on Friday. That involves heading to Kolkata to hopefully come back to Mumbai though which is not ideal.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
For much of the regular season the Sunrisers Hyderabad were looking unstoppable but then they qualified for the final stages with matches remaining and since then everything has gone pear shaped for them. Their bowling attack which hardly conceded a run to begin with is suddenly getting carted and you feel they are on a slope that they can’t get off of.
There has been a positive for the Hyderabad outfit in that time though. Their batting has come on leaps and bounds and you get the feeling that they have more batsmen in form now than they did in the early stages of the campaign. Recent matches would suggest they are going to need to that if they are to regain the title on Sunday.
Chennai Super Kings
We are used to the Chennai Super Kings being in the final stages of this competition but at the beginning of their return season you wouldn’t have put a lot of money on them making it back this year. They looked scratchy and underdone and their wins were all hard fought and at times on the fortunate side.
The longer the season has gone on though the better they have looked and you could argue that heading into the postseason they look the side most likely to win the tournament. They still need to show that on the field of course but their batsmen remain in good touch and they are starting to come to the party with the ball as well.
Team News
Sunrisers Hyderabad look to have one decision to make and that is in their fourth overseas spot. Kane Williamson, Shakib-al-Hasan and Rashid Khan have three of them tied down and the other looks to be between Alex Hales and Carlos Barthwaite but Mohammad Nabi and Chris Jordan could be used.
Chennai Super Kings have kept on bringing Faf du Plessis into their side and then dropping him again but that suggests to me that at this crunch time they want him in. He could bat in the middle order in place of Sam Billings who hasn’t made much of an impact recently.

Betting
With two matches at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, with a women’s match preceding the men’s one, I’m expecting to see a very good batting wicket. The IPL has generally wanted their showpiece matches to be played on quality wickets and assuming that is the case here I expect the trend of high scoring matches between these two sides to continue.
Both regular season matches between this pair were high scoring and the first of those was when the Sunrisers’ bowling attack was in good touch. The Wankhede is a small ground so I’m expecting to see a number of sixes in a match which has two deep batting line ups feasting on a couple of bowling attacks who might not be performing to the level they should be. The line for this one is 11.5 which is very much on the low side and I expect it to be covered.
