Four teams who will all have their eyes on winning the MLS Cup this season form the Sunday schedule in the Major League Soccer weekend as we have two tasty looking tussles to round off the latest set of fixtures in the competition.
It could be a big night in the Eastern Conference where three of the four teams on show are housed and with all four sides being of play-off credential we should be in for quite some evening. Both matches are live on TV in the UK so there is no need to miss any of it.
Seattle Sounders vs Atlanta United (20.55)
The first of the two matches on the evening sees the last two champions battling it out as the 2017 winners Seattle Sounders host the current holders of the MLS Cup in Atlanta United in what should be a high class way to start the action.
Seattle head into the match unbeaten at home this term and while they had a right wobble heading into the midseason break they have come out of it looking better. We are so used to seeing them power home in the second half of the campaign and this will be a decent test as to whether we can expect them to do that again here. Atlanta have lost their last four away matches and their 5-1 humbling in Chicago recently was particularly damaging to their reputation.
I expect Seattle to win this match but champion sides tend to raise their game for the big clashes so given that there isn’t a whole lot in the price for the Sounders I’ll opt to leave this one alone and wait for the second game for my betting potential.
New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC (23.30)
The second match of the night is an important one both in New York itself and the Eastern Conference as a whole as the New York Red Bulls host their rivals New York City FC in the latest Big Apple derby.
One of these sides will leave the weekend in third place in the Eastern Conference table if they win here and they would have plenty of matches in hand of those above them to strengthen their position further. NYCFC have only lost two matches this term so they are hard to beat but to their credit the Red Bulls look better than their results have suggested so this one is nicely set up for a good tussle.
I fancy a few goals in this match. Last season these derbies were tight but they do have a history of being high scoring. Matches at Red Bull Arena currently average 3.10 goals per match this term while six last the Red Bulls’ last seven have had four or more goals in them. Prior to their narrow loss last time out the previous four NYC matches had three or more in them so current form and the fact that both teams look better going forward than at the back, suggests over 3 is the way to play this one.
