The final match of another excellent Sunday in the National Football League comes in the Sunday Night Football, which this week sees two of the better sides in the NFC clashing when the Los Angeles Rams take on the Chicago Bears.
Both these sides would have been expecting to win their division but both trail by quite a margin so losing here is not really an option if they want to stay in the hunt for a playoff place let alone their division hopes.
Los Angeles Rams
When the Los Angeles Rams begun the season 3-0 it seemed almost automatic that their campaign would end at the Super Bowl in Miami but they are only 2-4 since then which includes a defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, which is probably a concern for them. That loss was probably on their offense which is very much a concern. They look a muddled side as they haven’t been able to establish the run as often as they would like, which highlights their limitations.
The positive they have is the way their defence is going. Jalen Ramsey looks to be the missing piece of the jigsaw and no team in the last four matches have put up more than 20pts against the Rams. They have played a couple of tasty sides in that run as well. If they can sort out their offense there is still a postseason place in them but at 5-4 they are running out of wiggle room in terms of more losses on their slate.
Chicago Bears
One of the surprises of the campaign so far has been the Chicago Bears. A lot was expected of them after their fine season last term but they’ve never truly got going and you get the impression that they could be making up the numbers from here on in with a 4-5 record. Sometimes you can have that record and be unlucky but theirs is a genuine record and there is an argument that they don’t even deserve to be that good.
The Bears don’t need to look too far to see where they need to improve. Their offense has been horrendous, only twice scoring more than 21pts this season and one of those was against the Washington Redskins and that barely even counts so poor are they. They need to find ways of getting to the end zone. If they do then their defence is still playing the sort of football it was last season, but their offense looks a mile off that pace.
Betting
I can’t see beyond the Los Angeles Rams here. Very few teams have got much joy from the Rams defence in recent times and I see nothing in this Bears offense to suggest they are any more likely to get many points from them. It is possible that the Bears defence can win this match if Jared Goff has an off day but even then I don’t see them restricting this Rams offense enough.
Todd Gurley is slowly getting into his stride and if he can run strongly and give Goff a little more time to get his throws away this could be a long night for the Bears defence. Either way you’ve got to think the Rams are going to go hunting on defence and whatever their offense is capable of producing, I expect their defence to restrict the Bears enough to cover five points.
