The final match of another excellent and busy Sunday in the National Football League comes from the Superdome in New Orleans as the New Orleans Saints take on the Dallas Cowboys in a clash which could easily be the NFC Championship match later in the season.
Both sides go into this match with winning records with the Cowboys unbeaten while New Orleans Saints have a 2-1 record having lost to the Los Angeles Rams a couple of weeks ago. Whoever wins this will be in decent shape a quarter of the way into the season.
New Orleans Saints
It looked like the season was over for the New Orleans Saints when Drew Brees left the field during the match against the Los Angeles Rams with a hand injury which we now know is expected to keep him out last week but nobody told that to Teddy Bridgewater who guided the Saints through to a good win against the Seattle Seahawks last week. He has all the tools required to be a hero in Brees’ absence so this is a wonderful opportunity for him.
We know the Saints have the weapons on offense both in the passing game and the running game so as long as Bridgewater offers a clean game here the home side will be looking to their defence to guarantee them a win. They match up well to the Dallas Cowboys as they are watertight against the run and while Dak Prescott is a good quarterback you want him to have to beat you rather than let the Cowboys running game do it.
Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys head to Louisiana with a perfect record for the season although they are yet to face anything significant so we are going to find out a lot about their credentials in this contest. Their three opponents so far have two wins from 12 matches between them and one of those wins came against another of the set so the Cowboys have had a very soft schedule, one which gets a lot tougher here.
Dallas have built their success on a lights out running game in recent times although to be fair to Dak Prescott he has risen with this team. Defensively the Cowboys are competitive so it would be a real surprise if they are not competitive both in this match and the season as a whole. It will be interesting to see just what they can offer here as we’ve not really found out too much about them to date.
Betting
I get that the injury to Drew Brees levels out the advantage that the New Orleans Saints would have over the Dallas Cowboys but I don’t think it weakens them to the extent that the odds would suggest. The truth is we don’t know how good the Cowboys are at the minute because we’ve not seen them up against anything. They have beaten what has been in front of them pretty comfortably but this will give us more of an idea.
Given that they are odds against and given that we’ve seen the strength of the Saints roster and how it can beat good sides I’m going to take a chance on the Saints. This should be a tight game and so home advantage might be the difference. They match up well to Dallas as well which is a positive. The home side look a little too big to me.
