The final match of a busy but entertaining Sunday in the NFL comes from Ohio where the Cleveland Browns will look to ride the hype machine again when they take on the beaten Super Bowl side from last season in the Los Angeles Rams.
There has rarely been a side so showered in expectation heading into a season as what the Browns were carrying but just quietly the Rams went about seeking a way to go one better than they went last season.
Cleveland Browns
There was so much enthusiasm among the Browns followers going into the season that they were almost inevitably set up to fail in the opening week. I don’t think anyone saw the strength of the demise against the Tennessee Titans but to their credit they did a job on the New York Jets on Monday night to get themselves back on track. They now have to deliver in their home stadium where their record will be crucial if they are to make a run for the playoffs.
Ever since he became the starter for the Browns there has been a lot of attention on Baker Mayfield. He had an awful game in the opening week raising questions over whether he is the man to lead this side. He showed last week he can but this is big time pressure in front of an expecting crowd on primetime. His ally is his defence which looks right up there while Odell Beckham Jr should be his best friend all season.
Los Angeles Rams
Other sides have taken much more of the limelight but just quietly the Rams are up and running once again. They have won their opening two matches without any fuss whatsoever and already look like a side who will be challenging for the NFC Championship once again. If anything, there is a case to be made that they look stronger than they did last season which almost beggars belief. Time will tell on that score.
If there is something that could hold the Rams back it might just be injuries. They have a couple of big players rated as questionable here in Aaron Donald and Todd Gurley and while the latter hasn’t delivered the huge numbers that he might have done in previous seasons, his absence will still be felt should be not suit up. The Rams defence looks even tougher with players like Clay Matthews coming for the quarterback.
Betting
I’ll be interested to see how the Cleveland Browns go here and also whether the expectancy in the stands has quietened down a little. Even the most ardent Browns fan must surely have their side as the underdog in this one which could help them, but even then I still expect the Los Angeles Rams to win this match. They might not run away with it like the Titans did here a couple of weeks ago but they should have enough to cover a field goal.
Although the Browns won in Monday night, I didn’t think Mayfield was terribly impressive and he’s going to be under a lot of pressure from the pass rush in this match so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make some crazy decisions. The Rams’ offense looks well balanced and they look like the sort of side who are going to raise their game for this occasion. I’ll take the Rams -3 in this one.
