The second match of the Super League Magic Weekend on Sunday afternoon sees the Wakefield Trinity and Huddersfield Giants meeting for the second weekend in succession after they also did battle in the Challenge Cup last week.
The Giants were successful on that occasion and they could do with a similar outcome at St James’ Park but Trinity are entitled to be a tough nut to crack on this big stage so we should be in for a fascinating derby.
Wakefield Trinity
It is now three defeats from four matches for the Wakefield Trinity in all competitions and in fairness their big margin win over an injury battered Hull KR side probably doesn’t really do much for their form guide so Trinity will be looking to stop the rot here. They are a much improved side over the last few seasons but they can have lengthy spells of indifferent form which is a concern.
When they are at their best they can be a match for anyone as they have already proved this season when they were one of just two sides to beat St Helens in Super League. On the other side of that they were thrashed by Salford Red Devils not so long ago so there is a Jekyll and Hyde look to this Wakefield side right now.
Huddersfield Giants
It has been a time of turmoil for far too long for the Huddersfield Giants. We shouldn’t forget that it is only 18 months ago they were five minutes from winning the League Leaders’ Shield but since then everything has gone belly up. They are much better than they have shown for the past season and a bit but it is one thing saying it and knowing it. It is another to prove it on the field.
They might be starting to turn a corner in their form though. They go into this match with successive wins after a victory of Widnes in the Super League was followed by the Challenge Cup success last weekend and if they can find another win here it will give them a good platform for when the new coach finally obtains a work permit.
Team News
Wakefield Trinity have brought Ben Jones-Bishop and Danny Kirmond back into their squad for this match. Max Jowitt is one player who has played the price and drops out. Scott Grix remains out for Trinity.
Huddersfield Giants stand-in coach Chris Thorman has recalled Aaron Murphy and Oliver Roberts to the squad. Daniel Smith has picked up an injury and misses out while Sam Wood is out too. Jermaine McGillvary could play his first Super League game in a while.

Betting
I’m starting to get a little concerned for the form of Wakefield Trinity I must admit and I actually think the Huddersfield Giants are worth chancing here. I don’t expect Huddersfield to win comfortably but they do have a good record at the Magic Weekend and last week’s win has to count for something.
Trinity have just lost their way at the minute and I’ve a feeling Scott Grix will be a huge miss. On a big pitch like this one I like a good kicking game and Huddersfield have that in Danny Brough and they have potent wingers to exploit the spaces. At 13/8 the Giants are value to beat Wakefield for a second weekend in a row.
