The third major championship of the year will be won on Sunday when the final round of the US Open gets played out at The Country Club in Brookline, Boston, on what promises to be an extremely dramatic day of golf.
We have two men who haven’t won either on the PGA Tour or a major leading the way at the 54 hole mark and a whole host of star players in behind hoping for the door to be opened for them. This has all the hallmarks of a great US Open Sunday.
Round 3 Recap
We began the day with joint leaders and we end it that way as well although the personnel are not the same. It is Will Zalatoris and our pre-tournament pick Matthew Fitzpatrick who will tee off in the lead on four under par. They are a shot clear of the defending champion Jon Rahm with the world number one Scottie Scheffler alongside another of our pre-event picks in Keegan Bradley and Adam Hadwin on two under. Rory McIlroy and our other outright selection in the mix Sam Burns will tee off one under, three off the pace.
It was a day of ties for us in the third round betting. At one stage Scottie Scheffler traded 4/9 to be the third round leader but then he stuck in a horror four hole burst and had to hang on for a dead heat in the place department for that bet. Despite being +5 for the round, Brian Harman had a putt to win his two ball against Patrick Rodgers who had a mare of a back nine. Unfortunately he missed and could only tie which was no use to us.
Sunday Betting
There is the usual outright market and the top finishing position markets to go at heading into Sunday but I’m not going to bother going in again. I go into Sunday three-handed in the outright betting with Fitzpatrick tied for the lead, Bradley in a share of fourth spot and Burns in a tie for seventh. While there is some serious talent on the leaderboard, I would still be disappointed if I don’t get either the winner or a bunch of places from here on in. the other reason not to go in again is the conditions are expected to be cooler than they have been all week so we don’t quite know how that will impact the dynamic of the course.

Sunday 2 Balls
One of the bones of contention on Saturday was how late the final group went out. The last tee time is an hour earlier in the final round not for any protest but in case a play-off is needed as it was at the USPGA Championship. Will Zalatoris and Matthew Fitzpatrick will go out in the final group at 19.45 BST with Jon Rahm and Keegan Bradley out at 19.34 BST and Scottie Scheffler and Adam Hadwin our at 19.23 BST. Other notable groups throughout the day include Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay at 17.28 BST, Hideki Matsuyama and Dustin Johnson at 18.01 BST and Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns at 19.12 BST.
Gary Woodland vs Denny McCarthy
Match tees off at 18.50 BST
Two men who shot through the field with under par rounds from an early tee time on Saturday will be out in the sixth to last group on Sunday when the former champion Gary Woodland is paired up alongside Denny McCarthy.
McCarthy made the cut on the number but a fine 68 in the tough Saturday conditions now has him just five back from the lead. Woodland was a shot better off after 36 holes but his 69 ensured he is very much involved in this thing, if not to win the event, certainly to finish high up the leaderboard and bank a decent cheque for his efforts this week. Woodland has killed this course from tee to green. He leads the strokes gained off the tee and sits second in greens in regulation. While his short game and putting hasn’t been brilliant he is still ahead of the field on both. McCarthy is in this position largely because of his putter. He has gained more than five strokes on the field with the short stick this week. That is no surprise because he’s a brilliant putter but I think in the cooler conditions which will make this course play a lot longer you need to be striking the ball well to get around here on Sunday. That brings me to thinking that Woodland, who has a natural length advantage on McCarthy, will be better suited to the test that awaits these players.
