The second round of Wimbledon begins on Wednesday as half of the remaining players in both the men’s and women’s draws are back on the court looking to make it into the last 32 of the third Grand Slam of the year.
Those players who came through on Monday will be back on the court on Wednesday with some tasty match ups among them and no doubt stacks of drama and excitement on the perfectly mown lawns of SW19.
Day 2 Recap
As you would expect there were comfortably wins for Serena Williams, Angelique Berker and Rafael Nadal on Tuesday and although Roger Federer ran out an easy winner in the end he had to come from a set down to beat Lloyd Harris. Elsewhere the likes of John Isner, Marin Cilic, Jo Konta and Ash Barty make it through safely on a day where genuine shocks were few and far between.
One shock as far as the bookmakers were concerned came in the form of Dominic Thiem getting beat by Sam Querrey, as we predicted would happen. We also predicted Andrey Rublev would beat Cristian Garin and he did to ensure decent profit for us on the day even though Katie Swan was poor and Ons Jabeur ran into a Petra Kvitova masterclass.
Special Offer
Centre Court
It is the Eastbourne champion Karolina Pliskova who will get the action underway on Centre Court when she takes on the Olympic champion Monica Puig in what should be a good game. Kyle Edmund gets to play in the middle match on Centre when he takes on the experienced Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco. Novak Djokovic then gets to close out the session of play on the biggest court on site when he takes on Denis Kudla of the USA in what is expected to be another comfortable win for the defending champion.
Court 1
British eyes will be on Court 1 first up on Wednesday when Heather Watson greets the big stage as she faces the powerful Estonian player Anett Kontaveit before the Queens winner Feliciano Lopez gets to perform on a show court at Wimbledon once again. He has a stiff challenge in the form of the Russian rising star Karen Khachanov before the former US Open champion Caroline Wozniacki rounds off the day when she faces another Russian player in the form of Veronika Kudermetova who has never been past this stage of a Grand Slam.
Court 2
Stan Wawrinka is back out on Court 2 in the first match on show over there. He faces off with the big serving American player Reilly Opelka before the former women’s number one Simona Halep is up on court. The Romanian players her compatriot Mihaela Buzarnescu before last year’s beaten finalist Kevin Anderson is up for his second round clash. That comes against Janko Tipsarevic before the last match on show out on the infamous Graveyard court sees the youngest player in the draw in Coco Gauff looking to back up her win over Venus Williams in the first round when she takes on Magdalena Rybarikova.
Court 3
Elina Svitolina brings a top quality presence to proceedings in the first match out on Court 3 on Wednesday when she goes up against Margarita Gasparyan before our outright pick from this half of the draw, Milos Raonic, goes up against Robin Haase. The exciting Felix Auger-Aliassime follows his countryman onto court when he has a second round date with Corentin Moutet with former US Open finalist Madison Keys rounding off a good looking day on this court with a clash against Polona Hercog of Slovenia.
Best of the Rest
There are plenty of seeded players dotted around the grounds on Wednesday with Anastasija Sevastova, Daniil Medvedev, David Goffin, Sofia Kenin, Maria Sakkari, Benoit Paire and Petra Martic among them. There is also the start of the men’s and ladies doubles events across the grounds so there is much to enjoy either by those with ground passes or us watching on the many streaming options available.

Men’s Betting
There are three bets for me in the men’s draw on Wednesday with Miomir Kecmanovic the first of them. He was good to me in the opening round so I see no reason not to support him against Benoit Paire who can blow hot and cold at the best of times. The fiery Frenchman can easily beat himself let alone requiring the young Serb to do it. Although he lost the first set in the first round, I liked how Kecmanovic was hitting the ball and I think he’s a nice bet at odds against here.
Thomas Fabbiano looks like he has the energy of the Duracell bunny which is good because he has a potentially lengthy match with Ivo Karlovic on his hands on Wednesday. Karlovic will bomb down big serve after big serve at the diminutive Italian but Fabbiano is likely to give as good as he gets so this one has all the hallmarks of a long day at the office for whoever comes out top in it. Tiebreaks look likely throughout and a couple of them and four sets will see is go beyond 45.5 games in this one. It is a high line but not without good reason. I’ll play the over.
Finally I’ll have a go with the Queens champion Feliciano Lopez who is back playing some good tennis and I think he can have the beating of Karen Khachanov out on Court 1. These low bouncing courts aren’t going to do much for the Russian and the slices and skiddy shots of the Spaniard are going to give him nightmares and that is before we mention the serve of the man who did the Queens double not two weeks ago. Lopez comes alive on the grass while I fancy Khachanov needs the hard court season to come around. I like Lopez at odds on here.
Women’s Betting
I’ll go with two in this draw too with the first on Anett Kontaveit who I expect to have too much for a Heather Watson who was massively flattered by her result in the first round. She won in straight sets but only she will know how as for much of the first set she was incredibly poor and she fed on an under pressure opponent in the second set. Kontaveit might not be the best grass court player in the world but I expect here to have a fair bit too much for Watson. The Estonian can cover a 3.5 game handicap here.
Coco Gauff saw off Venus Williams in the first round and I’m not convinced she is done yet. Of course it is always tough to back up an emotional performance like that next time out but the truth is she might not need that level to see off Magdalena Rybarikova and it isn’t like Gauff is playing the next day or anything like that. The talent of the American is clear for all to see and there has been plenty of hype around her for quite a while. She can continue to justify that by dumping out the 2017 semi-finalist.
