The first round of the two singles draws at Wimbledon are scheduled to conclude on Tuesday but whether that is able to happen or not given the number of matches that need to be caught up on after the rain on Monday remains to be seen.
One thing is for sure, if anyone was concerned the competitiveness of this tournament would be any different without ranking points on the line we saw on Monday that there is no need to be worried and Tuesday isn’t likely to be any different.
Day 1 Recap
The opening day of the tournament saw a couple of surprises but the real big names all made it through. They included Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz who were both made to work for their victories while it was much more straightforward in the women’s draw for Ons Jabeur and Anett Kontaveit. We did lose the two number seven seeds with Hubert Hurkacz and Danielle Collins biting the dust in deciding sets. There were better news for the Brits though with Andy Murray, Emma Raducanu and Cameron Norrie all progressing.
It was a decent first day for us match betting wise with Jan-Lennard Struff taking Carlos Alcaraz the distance which meant that him covering the handicap was never in any doubt. Better was to follow when Marie Bouzkova came from a set down to take care of Dani Collins to make it two from two on the day. One of our Monday bets was scrubbed from the schedule with us having to wait for Tuesday to see if Yanina Wickmayer can progress. In the other bet Christian Harrison leads 76 61 55 when play resumes on Tuesday after darkness halted it on Monday.
Centre Court
Three matches take place on the Centre Court on Tuesday and after two men’s matches on this court on Monday there are two from the women’s draw to enjoy here. The French Open champion and runaway world number one Iga Swiatek will get us up and running when she meets Jana Fett. Rafael Nadal then steps onto the main court to see if he can make it Grand Slam win number 15 from 15 in 2022 when he takes on Francisco Cerundolo. Another legend makes her return to SW19 in the last match of the day on this court when Serena Williams goes up against Harmony Tan.
Court 1
The beaten finalist of 2021 gets the action up and running on Court 1 as the Queens champion Matteo Berrettini looks to move into the second round once again. He meets the clay court specialist Cristian Garin in his opener. The second match on this court will see Heather Watson playing out the deciding set of her match against Tamara Korpatsch which was hauled off at a set each on Monday evening. When they are done the 2019 champion Simona Halep is back at Wimbledon looking for another title. The Romanian has a huge clash with the extremely competent on grass Karolina Muchova in what looks the pick of the matches from the women’s draw on the day. When they are all done the Mallorca champion Stefanos Tsitsipas begins another quest for a maiden Grand Slam title when he takes on Alexander Ritschard.
Court 2
There are four matches on Court 2 on Tuesday and the first of those sees the former Queens champion Grigor Dimitrov looking to progress into the second round when he takes on the veteran Steve Johnson. Coco Gauff will get her campaign underway in the second match on the court. The American meets Elena-Gabriela Ruse before the past winner here and champion in Eastbourne last week Petra Kvitova starts out on her quest for a third Wimbledon title. She takes on Jasmine Paolini before all home eyes turn to this court as British number two Dan Evans goes up against Jason Kubler.
Court 3
There are five matches on an ambitious looking schedule over on Court 3 on Tuesday. That begins with the Greek ace Maria Sakkari taking on Zoe Hives before Nick Kyrgios begins his quest for a first major title when he takes on the home player Paul Jubb. Felix Auger-Aliassime has been relevant in three of the last four slams and he goes up against the Eastbourne finalist Maxime Cressy in the third match before the former champion here Garbine Muguruza looks to put a terrible run of form behind her to move into the second round at the expense of Greet Minnen. The 2021 finalist Karolina Pliskova is the last big name on show on this court. She faces her fellow Czech player Tereza Martincova.
Best of the Rest
There is a full schedule around the outside courts on Tuesday so if you have a grounds pass or are sat in front of the streams then you should be nicely entertained. Belinda Bencic and Paula Badosa will be in action over on Court 12, as will the Eastbourne champion Taylor Fritz, while on Court 18 Alex de Minaur and Diego Schwartzman will be some of the players beginning their campaign. Botic van de Zandschulp and Camila Giorgi will be on show on Court 4 with Reilly Opelka, Filip Krajinovic, Shelby Rogers, Amanda Anisimova, Roberto Bautista Agut and Jenson Brooksby are just some of the other seeds in action.

Men’s Betting
I’ll go with a pair of bets in the men’s draw on Tuesday to add to what I hope will be a winner with Christian Harrison. The first of those bets is over 39.5 games in the match between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Maxime Cressy. The Canadian seems to always make life difficult for himself in the opening round of a Grand Slam even when the draw is an easy one on paper. It certainly isn’t that here as he takes on the serve and volley specialist Maxime Cressy who just made the final at Eastbourne. I might not have been as confidence of Cressy being competitive in this match if it was Monday after what is a hectic week at Eastbourne but the extra day off will help. I don’t expect too many breaks of serve in this match and given that FAA has only won two of his 12 Slam openers in straight sets I expect four or more sets here which should see the games line comfortably covered.
The pick of the men’s matches on Tuesday might just be on the outside courts where Lorenzo Sonego takes on Denis Kudla in London for the second time in three weeks after they met at Queens a couple of weeks ago. Kudla, who absolutely loves it on the grass, won that match in a deciding set to follow up the win her had in his other match against the Italian in Miami earlier in the year. After beating Sonego at Queens, Kudla gave the eventual champion Matteo Berrettini a run for his money before going down in the last 16. The American has already beaten Andy Murray on grass this season and while Sonego isn’t the worst grass court player in the world, he is only 3-3 on it this season. I fancy Kudla to complete a hat trick of wins here.
Women’s Betting
Two bets catch my eye in the women’s draw on Tuesday as well with the first of those coming in the form of the Bad Homburg semi-finalist Alize Cornet who I think can see off Yulia Putintseva over on Court 10. Putintseva is ranked the higher of these two players but that is largely down to her clay form because she is pretty ordinary on grass, going 10-16 since 2015. Cornet is much better on the grass as she showed when beating Angelique Kerber in Germany last week, while last year she twice took care of Bianca Andreescu on this surface as well as Garbine Muguruza. Elina Svitolina was among her grass court victims in 2019 so the French woman is no stranger to beating higher ranked opponents on the green lawns. With the confidence of last week behind her I think Cornet is well worth a bet in this one.
Donna Vekic has probably lost her way overall over the last four years or so but I do always think there is something in her when it comes to the grass court season and already she has shown that once again. The Croatian is 7-3 on the grass this year and now 22-13 on it since 2018 so this is a surface she clearly enjoys. Vekic made the quarter finals in Nottingham and the last 16 in Eastbourne where the eventual champion Petra Kvitova was too good for her. This will be the first outing on the grass this year for Jessica Pegula and while she had a brilliant clay court campaign, on grass she isn’t the best. She is just 7-7 going back to 2018 and that includes just one win in three matches at SW19. Vekic isn’t the best player in the world but she does go well on grass and has been on it for the last month. She’s value to pull off the upset here.
