2018 Scottish Open Snooker – Day 2 Betting Preview

The second day of the Scottish Open will see the first round of the tournament conclude inside the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. We’ve had one hectic day of competition and Tuesday promises to be exactly the same in the final tournament of 2018.

We lost some big names on Monday with Barry Hawkins and Stephen Maguire being beaten while Ronnie O’Sullivan pulled out on the eve of his first round match so already there is a bit of an open feel to proceedings this week.

Morning Session

Joe Perry is the big name on show in the morning session and as such he will be on the main table. He goes up against James Wattana while on the streamed offering Mark King is likely to be on show when he goes up against Mei Xi Wen in a match the Englishman will be expected to win but which could get tricky if he allows it to be.

The outside tables will be full in the morning session with matches with Jordan Brown facing Lee Walker, Ben Woollaston taking on Harvey Chandler, Chris Totten facing Gerard Greene, Ashley Carty meeting Craig Steadman, Alfie Burden playing Peter Ebdon and finally Thor Chuan Leong meeting James Cahill.

Afternoon Session

Ronnie O’Sullivan was meant to be the main man in this session but his withdrawal means that Mark Allen gets the TV table first up in the afternoon. He faces Liang Wenbo in the juiciest first round clash of the lot. The streamed table hasn’t been allocated yet but it could be that Alan McManus gets it when he faces John Astley. Rory McLeod meets Scott Donaldson on one of the outside tables with Dechawat Poomjaeng playing Luke Simmonds in another. Chen Feilong goes up against Fraser Patrick with Robert Milkins facing Fergal O’Brien elsewhere. Noppon Saengkham plays Dominic Dale in the other match.

Ryan Day will get the TV table in the second match of the afternoon. He faces Rhys Clark while the streamed table will see the European Masters champion Jimmy Robertson facing Lukas Kleckers. Zhao Xintong meets Ashley Hugill on one of the outside tables with Kurt Maflin playing Anthony Hamilton on another. David Lilley takes on Tom Ford in the other match on the outside tables. If there is time for a third TV match it will see Luca Brecel playing Hammad Miah while on the streamed table there is a Chinese battle between Xiao Guodong and Yuan Sijun.

Evening Session

The headline match in the evening session is the one between the Northern Ireland Open winner Judd Trump and Jimmy White which will be on the TV table. Jack Lisowski will get the chance to open up the evening session on the streamed table when he goes up against Adam Stefanow in what should be a decent enough match to watch. Jamie Clarke plays Mark Davis on one of the outside tables with Zhang Anda playing Ken Doherty. Matthew Stevens meets Li Yuan and Elliot Slessor plays Thepchaiya Un-Nooh. The other two matches sees Joe Swail taking on Andrew Higginson and Mark Joyce plays Ricky Walden.

Two matches have been saved for the two live tables as second matches on them with Stuart Bingham facing Tian Pengfei on one of them and the winner of the Paul Hunter Classic, Kyren Wilson going up against the lively Oliver Lines in the other.

Betting

Three bets for me on Tuesday with James Cahill being the first of those with Thor Chuan Leong expected to be his latest victim after he took care of Mark Selby in the UK Championship last week. Cahill will need to make the most of every opportunity that is given to him this season having not managed to win his tour card and when he gets to play lowly ranked opponents he really needs to ensure he doesn’t slip up. That is the case for him here and I’m expecting to see Cahill deliver the goods against an opponent who doesn’t have many wins to his name this term.

I’ll take a chance on Liang Wenbo in the afternoon session. He could well have it tough against Mark Allen given the form Allen has been in this season but he claimed throughout the UK Championship that he wasn’t feeling happy with his game and was struggling with his timing. Nothing is going to change in that regard ahead of this tournament as he hasn’t had time to work on it. He might also have a low petrol tank after last week too. Wenbo went out in the first round in York but he banged in two tons and looked really good in building up a 5-1 lead over Sam Baird before it all went wrong. He can make up for that here.

Anthony Hamilton has hit the skids since his run in the European Masters whereas Kurt Maflin is probably playing better than his results have suggested. He has run into Neil Robertson and Stuart Bingham in his last two events and taken both to a deciding frame so with a little bit of luck he could have beaten both. Hamilton lost 6-1 to Rod Lawler in the first round of the UK Championship which can’t possibly bode well for him. Prior to losing to Bingham in York, Maflin beat Anda Zhang which is a decent effort. At odds against he looks a good bet here.
