Such is the slog of the county season less than 48 hours after one set of Specsavers County Championship matches end another begins and with another break for the NatWest T20 Blast on the horizon these fixtures take on extra significance.
We’ve had a couple of weeks of red ball action now so there is no excuse for the counties not to be acclimatised to this format. The weather is set to be scorching hot so perfect for good cricket so we should get a good round of matches.
Division One
There are meant to be a lot of coverage of this round of matches as it was the one in which Virat Kohli was expected to be heading to Scarborough with Surrey to take on Yorkshire but he hasn’t come over now so there is less focus on that game. Instead the pink ball clashes between Essex and Somerset as well as Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire might get more of the attention. Hampshire head to Old Trafford to take on Lancashire in the other game which is with the red ball.
Division Two
There is only one red ball match in the second division this week. That sees Glamorgan playing host to Northamptonshire while with the pink ball two matches stand out. New leaders Kent host Middlesex down in Canterbury while Warwickshire will be looking to get back on the horse after their defeat last week when they head up to Durham. Derbyshire host Leicestershire in the low key pink ball game.

Betting
I like the look of three bets over the course of the week. I don’t normally play Hampshire in this format of the game because I don’t trust their batting but a number of players contributed against the pink ball last week and I would imagine with places at Lord’s on Saturday up for grabs there will be a big emphasis on their batting to get runs. They take on a Lancashire side who have named a very young squad for this match and go into it off the back of an alarming collapse last week. Some big players are out of this Lancashire side so if Hampshire can control Keaton Jennings they can win this match.
I also like the look of Surrey who even without the Curran brothers look a good bet at 10/11. They thrashed a good quality Somerset side last week and will take on a very weak Yorkshire who aren’t just missing their England players but also their England Lions ones too. Surrey have brought in Theunis de Bruyn to bolster their batting while Mark Stoneman is back having missed out last week. They look much stronger than Yorkshire to me this week.
Finally moving into Division 2 I think the new leaders Kent should be backed against a Middlesex who are also devoid of a number of stars who are away with the various international sides in action at the minute. That means there will be no Eoin Morgan, Paul Stirling, Tom Helm or Nick Gubbins while Steven Finn is injured. Kent might be missing Sam Billings but they are used to that these days so they look the stronger side and are in good form so they should be backed too.
