The third round of both the singles draws will come to an end at Flushing Meadows on Saturday when a number of star players play on day six of the US Open, with spots in the last 16 of the final Grand Slam of the year the reward for the winners.
We’ve seen the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams make it through already and on Saturday it is the chance for players such as Rafael Nadal, Naomi Osaka, Alexander Zverev and Caroline Wozniacki to join them.
Day 5 Recap
We saw comfortable straight set victories for the big three of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Serena Williams on a day where shocks were few and far between over the course of it. Madison Keys, Elina Svitolina and David Goffin were just some of the other names won had easy wins. The one real shock occurred in the opening match of the day where Alex de Minaur saw off the challenge of Kei Nishikori.
It was an up and down betting day for us on Friday with Feliciano Lopez covering the handicap in a tight night match against Daniil Medvedev while Ash Barty and Maria Sakkari went one over the game line but the schedule went against Dan Evans and despite having a mini-break in the first two tiebreaks Pablo Carreno Busta lost both and bowed out all too tamely. To add to the annoyance the daily accumulator was let down by one leg too.

Arthur Ashe Stadium
We begin the day with a crackerjack of a match from the women’s draw where Caroline Wozniacki takes on the Canadian ace Bianca Andreescu who is on this amazing unbeaten streak. When they have settled their differences Rafael Nadal will take to the court to take on the Houdini man of the last round in the former Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung to round off a good looking day session.
The pick of the third round matches in the women’s draw gets us fired up in the night session when Naomi Osaka continues her title defence when she goes up against the sensational Coco Gauff in a match where the eyes of everyone will be fixed on it. They won’t disappear too much when that is done either as the box office draw Nick Kyrgios goes up against the feisty Andrey Rublev in what should also be a belter.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
The hero of Thursday evening opens up the show on the Louis Armstrong Stadium court when Taylor Townsend takes on Sorana Cirstea before Julia Goerges looks to continue to go through the draw largely unnoticed when she faces Kiki Bertens for a place in the last 16. The day session on Armstrong concludes with Alexander Zverev looking to avoid a third straight five setter when he faces the former British player Aljaz Bedene.
It is the men who get the night session underway on Saturday night and it should be a cracking encounter as Gael Monfils takes on Denis Shapovalov in a contest which should take shot making to the next level. Two seeded women finish off the day over on Armstrong when Anett Kontaveit goes up against Belinda Bencic who will have good memories having broken through in this tournament five years ago.
Grandstand
Elise Mertens has the task of opening up play on Saturday afternoon when she goes up against Andrea Petkovic who will be looking to build on beating Petra Kvitova in the previous round. Kirstie Ahn will look to continue her dream run when she meets Jelena Ostapenko in the second match on this court before it will be bombs away when the men take to the stage as John Isner takes on Marin Cilic in a clash which the organisers might be glad there is a tiebreak in the final set with service breaks likely to be few and far between. Diego Schwartzman and Tennys Sandgren round off the show at some point in the evening.
Court 17
Singles and doubles combine to make up the order of play out on Court 17 and after a doubles match Yulia Putintseva will then take on Donna Vekic in the only women’s singles match on this court. Another doubles contest follows them before Matteo Berrettini and Alexis Popyrin battle it out for a place in the second week of the final Grand Slam of the year. Another doubles match rounds off the day which involves the Bryan brothers on court.

Men’s Betting
John Isner and Marin Cilic are likely to be on court for a while but when the final point is played I fancy it will be the American who makes it into the next round. Marin Cilic has done ok to get this far without standing out but there is no hiding that his form has not been good over the last few months. Isner hit the ball really well against Struff in the previous round and played the big points very well which bodes well for him here as there are going to be plenty of those deep in sets. Isner just looks in the better form to me so I’ll take him to come through this one.
Denis Shapovalov is another one who has done well to make it to this stage but there wasn’t a huge amount about his play in the previous round which stood out if I’m honest. Gael Monfils is playing nicely at the minute and while you always have to take his fitness on trust, I do think if he is fine he has the tools needed to see off Shapovalov in one of those matches you hope lives up to the expectation but fear that it probably won’t. I’m sure it will be competitive at times but I expect Monfils to win in the end.
Women’s Betting
Julia Goerges looks like good value to see off Kiki Bertens in one of the earlier matches on the day. The German hits a pretty clean ball and that can be the difference here. I always feel Kiki Bertens is better on slower clay courts and while she has come through here she has been behind a couple of times already this week. Her opponents have let her off on those occasions but I don’t think Goerges will do that. Her powerful groundstrokes can see her through here.
Belinda Bencic was a dark horse for a few people heading into the tournament and I probably subscribe to that. With that in mind, I’m a little surprised she’s only just below evens to see off Anett Kontaveit who tends to struggle at this level of a Grand Slam. Kontaveit hits the ball hard which in the day session might have an impact but late at night I’m less convinced it is a help and I fancy the better variety of the Swiss ace can prove the difference. Bencic is the better player of these two and she can show that dominance with a win here.
