The third round of the BNP Paribas Open at the ATP Indian Wells event comes to a close on Tuesday when the bottom half of the draw plays down to the last 16 stage of the opening Masters 1000 tournament of the year.
Once again Monday delivered on some great tennis and one or two surprise results and it would be foolish to think we are in for anything different over the course of the eight matches on the Tuesday schedule in the desert.
Stadium 1
There are just the two matches on the main court in the men’s draw on Tuesday. They come after a couple of women’s games which start the action off. When they go come around it is the popular American player John Isner who will be on show. He takes on Diego Schwartzman in what would be a mismatch if it was judged on height. The second match on this court comes along in the night session when the top seed in the bottom quarter now, Andrey Rublev, takes on the home star Frances Tiafoe.
Stadium 2
That means we have three men’s matches on the second court on Tuesday. The top ranked Italian player Matteo Berrettini gets us up and running in the first match of the day when he takes on Lloyd Harris before another of the Americans to have made it through to this stage of the tournament takes to the stage as Taylor Fritz goes up against Jaume Munar. The last match on this court comes in the night session when Alexander Bublik, the man who dumped out Andy Murray in the previous round, takes on Grigor Dimitrov.

Stadium 3
The remaining three matches come along on Stadium 3 on Tuesday and we start with a couple of unseeded players going at it when Miomir Kecmanovic meets Botic van de Zandschulp for a place in the last 16. When they are done the Australian number one Alex de Minaur takes on Tommy Paul who dumped out Alexander Zverev in the previous round. The other match will come along in the night session when yet another American takes to the court as Steve Johnson faces the man who will be defending the title in Miami next week in Hubert Hurkacz.
Betting
I’ll go with the one bet over the course of Tuesday and that comes in the form of Tommy Paul who I think will get the better of Alex de Minaur. Perhaps if the three-setter against Zverev had gone on for an age then I might have looked to oppose Paul here but it was only 2h15 which isn’t too bad by modern standards. The fact he could hold himself together and hold his nerve in that match against Zverev speaks volumes of his quality and of course he’ll have the crowd on his side here.
Alex de Minaur laboured to a win over John Millman in the previous round. It might be that the two being friends made that a hard match to play but even so he doesn’t really have the weapons to blow players away in these slower conditions. We’ve seen the players who hit through the court come through the best so far in this tournament and I just feel that Paul is more likely to do that than the Australian. De Minaur will run all day but I think the Paul game will be too much for him.
