The bottom two meet in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday when the Royal Challengers Bangalore host the Rajasthan Royals in what is a huge match for the away side as they bid to sneak into the play-offs through the back door.
After their defeat last time out, the Royal Challengers Bangalore know that their season is over from a competitive standpoint whereas the Rajasthan Royals have finally slipped into gear and can still get in the knockout phase with two more wins.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
We saw the Bangalore season in a nutshell in their defeat to the Delhi Capitals over the weekend. The bowled some absolute filth and got punished for it and there just is not enough batting to deliver the goods should either of the main two in their line up not go big. Although they threatened a late dash for the postseason, ultimately these issues which have been dogging them for far too long now has cost them dearly.
Every now and again when either Kohli or de Villiers do fire this Bangalore outfit are occasionally competitive but at the end of this season they really have to tear up their rule book and start again because this is the second shambles of a season in succession and both times it has been because of the same issues. They changed the coach for this campaign and that didn’t work so it has to be the players.
Rajasthan Royals
In many ways the Rajasthan Royals are in the same boat as their opponents in this match. They spent big on some big names in the IPL auction but what they didn’t do is give as much thought into where they would all fit into their side. When everyone was available their four overseas players all picked themselves because of the outlay on them and that lack of flexibility has been an issue throughout this campaign.
It should probably come as no surprise that they are starting to deliver the goods without those big players purely because they are a more balanced side. They clearly lack a bit of firepower since the English players have left, but at least players are playing in their correct positions in roles that they know and suit them. If they can keep that going for two more matches they might yet sneak into the play-offs.
Team News
Royal Challengers Bangalore surprisingly went for Heinrich Klaasen to replace Moeen Ali last time out but to say that didn’t work would be an understatement. With no pressure on them now it might be time to give Shimron Hetmyer the chance to show what he can do.
This is the final game of the season for Steve Smith so he is expected to skipper the side once again. After a win last time out it would be a surprise if Rajasthan do not name the same line up which performed so well in beating the Sunrisers.

Betting
We’re in Banglaore which means we need the outcome of the toss before we even contemplate betting on the match result and even then we could probably only consider the Rajasthan Royals to win the match. I certainly wouldn’t want to be on them if they are setting a score though given how hard this ground is to defend at the best of times.
Usually I would bet on the sixes on this ground but the likes of Steven Smith and Ajinkya Rahane do too much of their scoring along the floor for my liking and Virat Kohli can have big innings where all he hits is fours too. That is fine though because the boundaries on this ground are tiny whether through the air or along the carpet and the 43.5 line looks on the low side too. The seam departments of these two attacks go round the park at a crazy rate and that can see us beyond the 43.5 boundaries here.
