After a successful trial on our newsletters we are bringing our MLS coverage to the main site from this weekend onwards. Our coverage begins with the two Friday night matches, both of which kick off in the early hours of Saturday morning UK time.
The two matches in question see both of last season’s MLS Cup finalists in action as Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders play host to Sporting Kansas City and the new franchise Atlanta United respectively.
Toronto FC vs Sporting Kansas City
This match is actually the live game on Sky on Friday night and is Toronto’s first home match of the season so you would think they would be well up for this one. Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore will look to break down one of the meanest defences in the MLS so far in Sporting Kansas City.
Both sides go into the match unbeaten with both drawing two of their first three and that might be an indication that both sides haven’t settled down for the season just yet. Generally I like watching Toronto at home. They play attacking football but they can be caught on the counter. Given a lack of wins on the season the Canadians look a little short to me so I’ll sit this one out.
Seattle Sounders vs Atlanta United
My first official bet of MLS on this site comes in the match which isn’t on the TV and has the challenging 3am kick off time in the UK but for those who are staying up to watch it you may well be rewarded with a cracking match.
Seattle Sounders are renowned for being tough to beat in their own stadium while I couldn’t be any more impressed with Atlanta United’s impact this season if I had tried. Unfortunately a huge cog in the Atlanta United wheel is missing here with Josef Martinez on the sidelines. That is a big blow. I genuinely had Atlanta as title challengers before that news came out.
I think the style of the match will be the same without Martinez though. Seattle like to play aggressive and attacking football around the likes of Clint Dempsey and Nicolas Lodeiro while Atlanta are born to counter attack and they can still do that through the likes of Miguel Almiron and Yamil Asad.
It appears that both sides are going to have their internationals back for this one so I’m expecting to see a really high quality game and for me I think the over 2.75 goal line is still on the low side even with the Martinez news. Both sides have plenty of goals in them.
