The MLS weekend concludes on Sunday evening when the last two matches take place and they have a lot to live up to after a dramatic Saturday in the competition. It might be that the best has been saved for last though.
Both of the matches are live on TV in the UK for us to enjoy and with two recent MLS Cup champions and the reigning Supporters’ Shield holders among the four teams in action we should get a couple of entertaining games.
Atlanta United vs New England Revolution (18.30 – Sky Football)
The first contest comes from the Eastern Conference where the former MLS Cup winners Atlanta United look to solidify their place in the top seven in the table when they host the Supporters’ Shield holders New England Revolution at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
These two are two of the better teams in the MLS but injuries are hurting Atlanta United. They will be pleased to have ended an indifferent run with an emphatic win over the Chicago Fire last week and will be looking to build on that here. New England Revolution took a long time to get into their stride this season but seven points from their last 12 and a monster win in the cup in midweek suggests that Bruce Arena’s men are coming to the boil at long last. I fancy a Revs win here but I’ve learnt you don’t take the Five Stripes on at home. Goals would look likely but the line has got a little out of hand so I’ll sit this out but if it starts slow I’ll gladly jump on a decent in play goal line.

Seattle Sounders vs Minnesota United (21.00 – Sky Football)
The final match of the weekend comes from Lumen Field where the North American Champions League winners Seattle Sounders play host to a competitive Minnesota United side in a clash from the Western Conference.
Seattle Sounders currently sit bottom of the Western Conference and while they have been known to begin MLS campaigns slowly we probably shouldn’t really take too much from their current record because they have spent the last two months playing in the Champions League and really it has been their fringe players on MLS duty a lot of the time. Seattle have lost their last three MLS matches but in two of them they had the reserves out. In the other they just got caught up in a wild game in San Jose. Now that the CL has been and gone and they’ve had time to celebrate I expect Seattle to be fully focused on moving up the Western Conference table. They look to have a good chance to do that here against a Minnesota United side who don’t travel too well.
The Loons drew their opening away game then won their second one at New York Red Bulls but they were extremely fortunate to do so in a match where they lost the xG battle 2.96-0.53 in a 1-0 win. As a rule Minnesota don’t create much on their travels and have failed to score in their last two away games. Their four xG totals on the road have been 0.79, 0.53, 0.39 and 0.88. They should need much more to contain a Seattle side who have already gone to Minnesota and won this season and done it without Raul Ruidiaz. Seattle might be bottom of the table but they’ve played at least two games fewer than anyone else and in some cases four less so they are in a false position. I expect their quality to show here.
