The second week of the US Open begins with the conclusion of the last 16 in both the singles draws at Flushing Meadows on Monday. By the end of what looks another action packed day we will know the eight players battling it out for the final Grand Slam of the year in each draw.
There are star names throughout the day on Monday with high ranked players and former champions everywhere you look so the quality should be high on what is Labor Day in the US.
Day 7 Recap
It was another exciting day at Flushing Meadows with three lengthy day matches on Ashe and an excellent women’s match to begin the night session which is going on while this preview is being typed. There were wins for Venus Williams, Diego Schwartzman and Kevin Anderson but surprise defeats for Denis Shapovalov and Maria Sharapova.
Of the two bets that we had which have been completed we had a winner and a loser with Shapovalov annoyingly losing three tiebreaks having been a break of serve up in two of those sets. The games line in the Lucas Pouille and Diego Schwartzman match safely covered.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
The world number one Karolina Pliskova is the first star in action on Ashe. She faces the American player Jennifer Brady before the men’s match between the other world number one Rafael Nadal and Alexandr Dolgopolov. The day session concludes with Coco Vandeweghe taking on Lucie Safarova in a big hitting encounter.
There are two matches in what is sure to be a well-attended night session. Roger Federer begins the action when he faces Philipp Kohlschreiber before a tasty looking women’s match ends things when Elina Svitolina takes on the other powerful American player Madison Keys.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
There is a doubles match to get play going on this court but once that has finished two singles match will be played. The men’s match sees the ninth seeded David Goffin taking on Andrey Rublev before Daria Kasatkina faces Kaia Kanepi. Another doubles match will finish off the action on the Armstrong arena.
Grandstand
There are a good variety of matches on this court. They begin with a girls clash before the number one seeds in the men’s doubles are in action. The Bryans are up in the third match of the afternoon before the main event comes last. That sees Juan Martin del Potro taking on Dominic Thiem in what could be the match of the entire day.

Men’s Betting
I’m going with two bets although I have to admit I am severely tempted to ride Juan Martin del Potro’s 2-0 record over Dominic Thiem. His price is nothing to write home about though so I’ll go for two others.
Rafael Nadal has battled his way through this draw so far and I suspect he will have another battle on his hands when he faces Aleksandr Dolgopolov. The Ukrainian has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons recently but he has the chance to get the attention in a positive way here. He has a couple of wins over Nadal in his career so he should have belief he can be competitive early on. With Nadal not firing on all cylinders while I expect the Spaniard to win I think he might be forced to go beyond three sets for the third match in succession.
The other bet I like is David Goffin to have too much for Andrey Rublev. Credit where credit is due as far as the Russian is concerned. He has done excellently to get this far but we saw with Shapovalov on Sunday that things go up a notch now and the pressure moments become even bigger and harder to win. Goffin is used to that and much like Pablo Carreno Busta he is a very solid opponent who gives little away and makes the opponent beat him. I’m not sure Rublev is ready to do that on this stage yet though.
Women’s Betting
I expected close matches in the women’s draw on Sunday and we got them and I’m expecting two more on Monday. The match between Coco Vandeweghe and Lucie Safarova should be full of powerful strokes and big serves and I expect it to be close. Not one of their four meetings so far has had fewer than 20 games in it and on a hard court I would expect their sets to be tight so over 21.5 games very much appeals here.
I like the same bet in the night session match between Elina Svitolina and Madison Keys. Keys is full of power but the defence Svitolina has will make this match very interesting indeed. This has three sets written all over it in my eyes so the over 21.5 games line looks to be the play in this one.
