There were 32 men who started out in the World Grand Prix but only four remain, as we head into the semi-finals of the tournament at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin on Friday night, with spots in the final the reward on offer.
Three of the four men on show in the semi-finals will be eyeing up a first major TV title this weekend but they will all know that defending champion Michael van Gerwen remains the favourite ahead of the best-of-seven sets semis.
Glen Durrant vs Dave Chisnall
The opening semi-final of the night sees the BDO world champion Glen Durrant looking to make his first major PDC final when he takes on the former finalist of this tournament Dave Chisnall for a spot in the title showdown on Saturday evening.
Durrant has to be commended for making it through this far. He hasn’t played anywhere near his best and has been made to battle through all three matches but he has lived to tell the tale. There is no doubt in my mind that Chisnall has played the better darts this week. He was five points ahead of Durrant in the averages on Thursday night in the quarter finals and is scoring and getting in much better. I do think this will be a tight match but I’m already on Chisnall at 25/1 having backed him outright and I’ll let that ride in the hope that the form of the week comes to fruition here.
Michael van Gerwen vs Chris Dobey
The second semi-final would be a complete mismatch if it were decided on experience but thankfully for Chris Dobey, who is to embark on his first major TV semi-final, when he faces Michael van Gerwen who is relentless at reaching this stage of a tournament.
Given the extended format now, it would be one of the biggest surprises in the history of this tournament if Dobey wins this match, but he is sure to give it his all and he has already beaten Gary Anderson this week which shouldn’t be forgotten. I expect van Gerwen to win but something tells me Dobey could keep this closer than the odds suggest so I’ll look to one of the more obscure markets for a bet.
That comes in the form of the highest checkout being over 138.5. Both men had higher finishes than this in the previous round and with the double start there is more chance of finishes in the 140 and above range being left because of the need to move a score round to leave finishes. These two have been finishing well all week and I fancy one of them to ping a big out here.
