The second round of the ATP Indian Wells event concludes on Sunday when those who are yet to grace the courts at this stage of the BNP Paribas Open do exactly that on what looks like another decent day of tennis.
We saw some fantastic action over the course of a very entertaining Saturday and with the Sunday cast every bit as good we should be in for much more of the same as we pick up speed in the opening Masters 1000 tournament of the season.
Stadium 1
There are just the two matches from the men’s draw on Sunday as the women’s event sees the seeded players able to face each other for the first time. We have to wait to the final match of the day session for the men to come out to play and when they do Matteo Berrettini will be on show. He will face the impressive young Danish player Holger Rune and then in the night session the Olympic champion Alexander Zverev will be on court for the first time since he bashed the life out of the umpire chair in Acapulco. He will take on the home player Tommy Paul.
Stadium 2
There are just the two matches on the Stadium 2 court from the ATP event and we get them in the opening two games to be played. The first is a big serving all-American affair as John Isner goes up against Sam Querrey. When they are done we will see if Andy Murray can pick up win number 701 on the tour when he meets the 31 seed Alexander Bublik, who might not be assisted by the conditions out in Indian Wells.

Stadium 3
There are three men’s matches out on Stadium 3 on Sunday and the play in this part of the grounds begins with Andrey Rublev looking to overcome all the issues Russian athletes are having to carry at present. He takes on Dominik Koepfer and then when they are done one of the home hopes this week takes to the court when Taylor Fritz faces Kamil Majchrzak. The last of the men’s matches on this court comes in the night session where Frances Tiafoe will open up his campaign when he takes on his countryman Brandon Nakashima.
Best of the Rest
There are some decent names getting their campaigns underway on the outside courts on Sunday not least the Rotterdam champion Felix Auger-Aliassime who will be buoyed by his countryman Denis Shapovalov coming through on Saturday. Grigor Dimitrov is another who will start out while we also get to see the likes of Marin Cilic, Diego Schwartzman, Alex de Minaur and Pablo Carreno Busta on show for the first time this week.
Betting
I wouldn’t say that Facundo Bagnis is a player I want to back too often on a hard court but these courts are slow enough that I think it is worth taking him against a seriously out of form Lloyd Harris. The South African is searching for his form. He has only won one match in seven attempts in 2022 and that came at the Davis Cup last week where his victim wasn’t even ranked in the top 600 in the world rankings so how much he can take from that is open to debate.
Bagnis isn’t pulling up any trees but he has been winning some matches this season at least and had a good win over Henri Laaksonen in the first round here. He’ll know conditions after that win and should be able to remain in the rallies and if he can do that then he can wait for the errors to come from the racquet of the South African. Harris would be a clear favourite in this match on a normal hard court like in New York but on these slower ones I think Bagnis is overpriced.
