The Netherlands were probably the biggest disappointment in the T20 World Cup 12 months ago and they will head to Australia looking to make up for that. They will struggle to be as bad as they were in the UAE and they have already bounced back from that poor effort to come through the qualifying competition to get here. They will hope they are competitive enough to come out of Group A and secure their spot in 2024.

Team Guide
The Netherlands have the potential to be a good side. Six of their squad played in county cricket last season and two others were brought up in Australia so they should be used to the conditions. If there was a negative in them bombing out of the tournament earlier than they wanted 12 months ago it was that they got competitive match practice at the qualifier for the event. If they put that to good use and use the extra quality they have collected in their squad since then they could come out of Group A.
If they are to do that then they have to bat a whole lot better than they did in the UAE last year. When you look down their squad they have some very good batters but they floundered a year ago and can’t afford for that to happen again. There is no shortage of pace in this Netherlands attack so if they can have their radar tuned in right then this could well be a better tournament for them. They need to hit the ground running as their opening match against UAE is must-win.

Betting
I would imagine we are going to see a pretty competitive Netherlands bowling market throughout their tenure in the tournament because they have three or four good operators at county level and if they make the step up and adjustments here then they should be hard to get away. The problem is that I think they exit the tournament in the first stage so there is potentially only three matches for those bowlers to separate themselves which might not be enough.
That makes me focus on the batting where three matches is short enough for a cameo to reach their top score but I’m not sure anyone will deliver one which gets the better of Max O’Dowd over three or more matches. He grew up in New Zealand so these conditions won’t be alien to him and he is clearly the leading Dutch batter. He scored 96 more than anyone else in the Netherlands side in this tournament last year and while he might not be quite as dominant this time around he is clearly the better batter and opens the batting which might be significant given that there is rain around. At 2/1 he’s the pick for the top Netherlands batter.
