The Presidents Cup begins in Montreal on Thursday but before it gets underway there is just enough time to have a look at the various player markets which have been priced up for what should be a decent week of golf.
We have markets priced up about both teams and their highest point scorers, the captains picks, the rookies, individual nations and a whole lot more and with decent numbers in each market there are a few bets we like.
Top USA Scorer
The USA point scorer is always a competitive market when you consider the depth that they have within their ranks. I’m writing this preview after the day one fourball pairings was announced so we know that there will be no Max Homa or Brian Harman on the opening day and that immediately takes them out of my thinking. Scottie Scheffler is the favourite but I’m a little surprised he isn’t with Sam Burns on the first day.
I’m also surprised that Xander Schauffele isn’t with Patrick Cantlay but I would imagine that elite pairing will be restored for the Friday foursomes and that makes me think that Schauffele is the value in the USA market. You need someone who can be relied on to win a singles match and Schauffele is playing some of the best golf in the world right now. He is an elite ball striker and will be one of the few Americans who can keep it on the fairway. At 11/2 he looks an each way steal.

Top International Scorer
The market for the top International point scorer is often a tricky one to get stuck into because we don’t usually need many points for the winner to land. There is a school of thought that might be different this time around though. We can probably take Si Woo Kim and Mackenzie Hughes out of our thinking as we know that they are not playing in the opening session and while we probably aren’t looking for five points for the winner here I would like as many scoring options as possible.
The player I think is a bit of value here is Christiaan Bezuidenhout. I wasn’t sure if he would get a fourball outing but he has and he’ll surely play in the foursomes with his immaculate iron game and putting potential so all of a sudden we are in the realms of him playing all five sessions. If there is a negative it is that there isn’t another natural South African partner but were he to go with a decent driver or long game exponent they would be tough to beat in foursomes. He should be competitive in singles too so the 13/1 on the South African looks a little big to me.
Top USA Wildcard
There are six USA wildcards in the tournament this week but two of them aren’t playing the opening session and when you think it would be hugely unlikely that anything less than three points wins this market you’ve got to think that Max Homa and Brian Harman are out of the equation. I only say that because if they need at least three points and have a maximum of four sessions to play they have to play near perfect golf.
I quite like Keegan Bradley but I wonder if he’ll get enough sessions but by virtue of the fact that Sam Burns is out in the first session and will surely team up with Scottie Scheffler at some point in the weekend the 9/4 on him looks a good thing. He should go well with Patrick Cantlay in the opening session and unlike Tony Finau and Russell Henley he has a natural pairing with Scheffler in the foursomes. I think he is the one to beat in this market.
